New Chinese customs regulations on the import of food and agricultural raw materials

In China, new regulations for the import of food and agricultural raw materials came into force on 1 January 2022. Food producers who export their products to China must register online with Chinese customs. The same applies to companies that process or store these goods.

New regulations in food monitoring

Our WESSLING team in Shanghai is happy to assist companies that need to deal with these new regulations at short notice. The new import regulations were published by the China Customs Service in April 2021. Detailed instructions were only issued in October and the portal needed for online registration was activated in November. Not much time, then, for food producers who want to import their goods into China.

Which product categories are covered by the new regulatory registration obligation?

In total, this concerns 14 product categories, including

  • Intestines and stomachs
  • Eggs and egg products
  • Fats and oils for human consumption
  • Bee products
  • Mill products and malt
  • Food supplements
  • Functional foods

For all other food products, self-registration is mandatory. This can be done by companies on the same internet portal.
