Efficacy studies of cosmetic products

Advertising claims used in relation to cosmetic products are regulated by law in the EU. The Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 in conjunction with (EC) No 655/2013 stipulates that these claims must be legally compliant, truthful, evidentially supported, honest and fair.

The necessary evidence supporting these claims is usually provided by efficacy studies in the form of home use tests, studies with test persons or content determinations of value-adding ingredients. For certain ingredients in connection with the use of a claim, proof of the minimum quantity must be available.

Our cosmetic experts have a wide range of services at their disposal to prove that efficacy testing was conducted:

  • Testing of skin and eye compatibility
  • Wrinkle depth
  • Skin smoothing
  • Moisture measurement using the TEWL test to determine transepidermal water loss (skin roughness, wrinkle depth, skin hydration)
  • Sniff test
  • Determination of light protection factors and water resistance
  • Chemical-physical product stability

We are also happy to provide you with efficacy and tolerability studies for dental products and intimate care. Please do not hesitate to contact us for more information on these product groups.

Efficacy tests and ophthalmological tests

For cosmetic products that are used in the facial or eye area, it is recommended to conduct an ophthalmological test. Here, the eye compatibility is tested to be allowed to place claims such as “does not burn the eyes” or “no tears” on the packaging.

Studies to test the efficacy and claim support are always prepared, coordinated, and adapted individually together with our customers, considering individual customer requirements and the composition and claim of the corresponding cosmetic products.
