Update on 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in UV nail varnishes

Do your UV nail varnishes already comply with Regulation (EU) 2020/1682? It is coming into force on 03 June 2021 and thus amends Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products.

What is it about? From then on, the use of HEMA, short for 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, in cosmetic nail products is only permitted for commercial use. However, the sale of existing products is still possible until 03 September 2021. After that, products may no longer be sold to consumers, but only for commercial use.

We therefore advise all those who produce or market UV nail varnishes to have their product range carefully checked regarding the new requirement! Our experts for the safety of cosmetic products will be happy to assist you. With their expertise regarding the analyses that are now necessary, we are at your side and advise you neutrally and independently.
