Regulatory requirements for packaging materials of cosmetic products
How is the cosmetics industry responding to environmental issues such as CO2 neutrality, sustainability, environmental protection, waste prevention, recycling and microplastics? Undeniably, these are issues that have increasingly become the focus of public interest, policy and consumer products, in recent years. Therefore, the cosmetics industry is increasingly responding, for example by using alternative raw materials and recycled plastic packaging, so-called PCR (post-consumer recycled) packaging materials.
Use of PCR materials in packaging
In their recently published article “Regulatory requirements for packaging materials of cosmetic products with focus on the use of PCR materials” for the journal EURO COSMETICS our WESSLING experts Dr Sebastian Bertram, Winfried Rämisch, Antonia Mainka and Anja Fischer address the said requirements and the documentation, in particular of PCR materials, and deal with the evaluation of these packaging materials.
To ensure consumer safety, the requirements for the quality of packaging materials for cosmetic products are high and varied. An additional challenge is that since there are no specific legal requirements for packaging materials for cosmetic products, the regulatory requirements for food packaging materials are used as a guide.
