Quality assurance in galvanising plants: in-process analysis of zinc baths

WESSLING supports galvanising plants with the analysis of zinc baths and liquid baths, such as degreasing, rinsing, pickling and flux baths, in the quality assurance of their zinc melt to comply with DASt Guideline 022 “Hot-dip galvanising of load-bearing steel components” of the German Committee for Steel Construction. Our results provide important information on the chemical composition, which needs to be correct for a high-quality zinc coating.

Zinc bath

Zinc baths consist of almost 100 percent liquid zinc. To ensure a consistently high quality of the molten zinc, the chemical composition of the zinc bath should be checked at regular intervals to prevent quality defects in the zinc coating. Our experienced experts test the samples with a wet chemical analysis. The result provides an overview of the concentrations of the most typical trace elements aluminium (Al), bismuth (Bi), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), tin (Sn) with determination limits up to 10ppm. We also test for other elements on request.

We test liquid baths, such as degreasing, rinsing, pickling and flux baths, for the parameters hydrochloric acid (HCl), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), ammonium (NH4+), density, surface tension, pH value, iron (Fe), potassium (K), sodium (Na), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), silicon (Si) as well as carbon and the calculation of zinc chloride (ZnCl2), ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) and total salt content.
