Preventing infections at the dentist: analysis of legionella in dental water

For dentists and orthodontists practices we analyse dental water in accordance with the guidelines of the Robert Koch Institute, “Infection prevention in dentistry - hygiene requirements”, which recommends an annual microbiological examination. A ruling by the Minden Administrative Court, in March 2022, made it clear that the obligation to test can be derived from this recommendation to reduce the risk of infection from process water.

Our laboratory results provide certainty regarding the quality of both the cooling and rinsing water used. We determine whether process water is contaminated by a biofilm or legionella.

In the recommendation of KRINKO, the Commission for Hospital Hygiene and Infection Prevention, from 2006, the requirements for the microbiological quality of process water of dental units are described in detail. The examination of the following parameters is recommended, which our experienced staff in our microbiological laboratory can conduct for you:

  • Determination of colony count at 36°C
  • Determination of legionella
