Determination of ricinine content in cosmetic products

The experts at WESSLING succeeded in making it possible to determine the ricinine content in cosmetic products:

On the guidelines of the 18th meeting of the Commission for Cosmetic Products of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), the qualities of castor oils being used in the cosmetics industry were focused upon. It was discussed here how high the content of ricinine in the oils should be allowed to be.

The reason for the current discussion on ricinine is the fact that it is not inactivated by heat, unlike the known ricin. The known manufacturing processes therefore do not reduce the ricinine content. As few data are currently available, an evaluation is not yet possible. The BfR continues to follow the issue closely.
